Whyte Woolf: A Minimalist Fitness Club in Chongqing

Designing Simplicity and Nobility

Under the leadership of designer Arthur Yang, the Whyte Woolf fitness club in Chongqing, China, embraces the beauty of simplicity and minimalism. Inspired by the concept of "wabi-sabi," the club's design aims to create a contemporary space that reflects the elegance of imperfection and nature.

This project, located in the bustling city of Chongqing, is part of the renowned Joy City shopping center, operated by the influential COFCO group. Spanning over 2,100 square meters, Whyte Woolf stands out as a unique fitness club that combines modernity with the timeless appeal of simplicity.

The design team, including Arthur Yang, YE YANG, and XIN AN ZHOU, utilized low-carbon environmental materials such as galvanized snow plates, light steel keel cement pressure plates, micro-cement hole bricks, and log packaging boards to bring their vision to life.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was to convey the current global economic situation through the club's minimalist decor and accessories. By retaining the original inverted cement columns and walls, the team achieved a space that is simple yet far from ordinary.

Completed between September and December 2021, Whyte Woolf is a testament to the power of contemporary design in creating a harmonious and inviting environment. The club's location within the Joy City shopping center adds to its prestige, benefiting from the center's vast operating area and significant influence.

The exceptional design of Whyte Woolf has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. This award acknowledges the club's outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and contribution to improving the quality of life through the incorporation of art, science, design, and technology.

With its minimalist aesthetic and commitment to simplicity, Whyte Woolf offers a unique fitness experience in the heart of Chongqing. By embracing the beauty of imperfection and nature, this exceptional design sets a new standard for contemporary fitness clubs.
